What is Pentecost?

On August 4, I started a sermon series on the book of Acts. However, I came down with COVID and was unable to preach the second sermon, What is Pentecost? Therefore, I plan to take this time to share a small part of the message. The text is Acts 2:1-12. It is the story of the Holy Spirit falling on the disciples and how they were able to speak different native languages.

First, for the Jewish people Pentecost is the second most important feast day after Passover. I commemorates God giving the Law on Mount Sinai to Moses. (Ex 19:1) For Christians, Pentecost means the beginning of the church. The Holy Spirit was given by God to the apostles and disciples to build the church--the Bride of Christ.

When we recieve the Holy Spirit we gain spiritual power and strength through Spiritual gifts and fruit. These gifts are mentioned in Isa 11:2, 1 Cor 12:8-10, Rom 12:6-8, and Eph 4:11 (spiritual gifted ministries).

Some churches are centered on denominational beliefs, some on personality draw (based on the talents and skill of a pastor or worship leader), and some on a methodological center (based on a type of worship style). However, all churches that follow Christ should be Christ centered.

Through the ministry of Crossroads Community Church (Clothes Closet, Store House, Joshua House, Concerts, and worship) we have developed a ministry identity to fulfill the Great Commission.

I will resume the Acts series next Sunday, with Acts 4, The Chief Stone.
